The buzz words on everyone’s lips nowadays is Artificial Intelligence (AI). From company CEOs to high school students, to your grandmother exploring ChatGPT, AI is revolutionizing every day life. Tech CEOs paint a rosy picture of AI – how AI will create new jobs for us while automating mundane tasks.
These CEOs are yet to give us a scenario or an example where AI does not threaten our job – Why? Because they don’t know the outcome either. They say everything will be okay, while they drown in billions of dollars of net worth! These tech wiz’s have designed AI without fully exploring the moral, ethical & mental consequences on all of us – what else is new!
I know I sound harsh, but can you ignore the rapid pace of AI emergence and our dependence on it?
I include myself in this questioning. I ask AI for help on my workout routine, swim goals, therapy questions, existential questions, email writing, how to deal with a difficult person, and the list goes on and on.
Recently MIT published a study that found students using ChatGPT to write their essays exhibited lower brain engagement & neural connectivity compared to ones writing essays without the help of AI.
Now, as I write this post I was tempted to run it by Chat GPT for sentence & grammar corrections. But F**K it!
I will not!
The reality around is that everyone is concerned about their job safety, that an AI bot or a program will replace humans.
Organizations & Tech CEOs keep saying… “AI will take away the boring work from you so you can focus on the “big picture”
What the heck is the big picture?!…oh wait …let me ask AI!
(shakes my head)
Are we as a human race headed towards stupidity? Are we going to evolve to have smaller brains? We can’t stop ourselves from scrolling reels all day, all night. We have shorter attention spans. We feel like we are not enough. These are common thoughts running through our heads.
Here’s a fact! Homo Sapiens existed for 300,000 years. The first big revolution called Industrial revolution happened in the 18th century – nearly 299,700 years later. Guess how many years have passed from the Industrial revolution to AI today? Hardly 250 years! Such is the scale of development.
We are all in the dark about the possibilities, positive or negative, of AI. While the CEOs just can’t seem to stop being greedy. The growth goals increase YoY (Year over Year) and it is not going to stop.
These CEOs are cashing in big time and spending time on their yachts while others who are hardworking citizens are living in uncertainty, unable to afford homes because of ridiculous process, jaw dropping interest rates, every service trying to upsell you on something, free streaming services are not really free forcing you to upgrade!
Okay let’s shift to what we can do & a positive side to this – Here’s my 2 cents – as an ordinary citizen, as a blogger, as a woman, as a thinker…
- Awareness – being aware about what is happening around you is key. You get your news from social media?? – well stop before you consume it, and double check with at least two other independent media channels before you confirm.
- Stop believing everything you see on the internet. Half of what you see lately is AI generated – our senior citizens & elderly are most gullible to fall for fake news & fraud.
- Write down stuff once a day using a pen or a pencil, do simple math or critical problem solving without anyone’s help.
- And finally, ask you local leaders, your town council what they are doing about AI – how can we prepare ourselves for it, how does it affect our society, our livelihood. We need answers. “We are going to be okay” is not going to cut it!
Bit fiery today but these things should be on our mind and we cannot ignore anymore!
